Today in class we worked extremely hard on three things: getting some colors, working on sounds, and getting the groups drawings finished. During the two hours we finished getting the colors created. We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to have a great musician come and give us some sounds we needed. We finished all our sounds that we needed. This musician was also a fabulous artist and helped with our drawings. The drawings look amazing because of him.

            We didn’t get all the things we needed to get done such as some backgrounds and the programing. We did not get this stuff done because of the great honor we had to have a wonderful musician and artist. My group has one of our backgrounds done and two more to do. We haven’t started the programing but are in the direction to doing it. The programing will probably take at least two whole hours.

            Tomorrow my group and I will finish the backgrounds we need and start the programing. The backgrounds we will be working on are the instructions page and the welcome page. Both of those backgrounds shouldn’t take long but could. The programing will take up the rest of the time that we have left from making the backgrounds.

We are also using Incscape for our sprites, characters, rocks, etc., and Garageband for sound files like background music. The first step for making the sprites is manually drawing them, which today we created Peter the cat and Injun Joe. We also played around with the sound software, but we had some problems.
One of the problems we encountered was thinking of how to create our sound and have it still be the correct time period, for example our background music can not just be from this time period of instruments and sound, but it needs to fit the setting of our book. We were also experimenting with the sound program and sometimes it gave us trouble. Hopefully tomorrow we can do better.
Tomorrow we hope to learn more of GameMaker. We will be learning about how to import and use our sound files into the game and incorporate it. We will be hoping to improve our knowledge and move forward with our game.

What went well in class today was when we had a Skype call with Stacey Scholfield. Also, what went well for us was discussing room sizing for when we create our game. That is very important because we needed to know what sizes we were going to set the rooms in the video game. Also we discussed what songs we were going to use for to do in our project and where we wanted them incorporated in our game.

What difficulties we had faced in class today was that since we did not have lots of time we did not get as much accomplished as we had wanted. That was a large set back that we had. Also we seem to struggle on deciding which group members are to do which part in our project. That took time away in which we could have been working. Finally our sketches we drew were not quite as good as other groups. Their pictures seemed to be better than ours.

Tomorrow we hope to accomplish and complete a large number of things, mostly very important. Such as finishing up finding the figurative language in the chapters that we need. Also we need to start creating our vectors and our sound for the game. That could take a long time, so our group will need to split up, so some can go make vectors and sounds. While some of us go and find figurative language. Also some group members need to create the sketches we will need for our game.

Successes: Today, our group definitely made progress, and we worked extremely well as a team. The Google Document stayed organized throughout the entire workday and everyone was getting well involved. We have a much smaller group compared to other teams, but if we work as efficient as we have been, we’ll definitely finish much earlier than larger groups. Our group moves very quickly but stays organized and I’m really looking forward to tomorrow.

Challenges: As always, nothing is perfect. Therefore, our group has a few struggles, such as getting off topic. It is quite easy for our team of five to become distracted with the web camera installed on the computer. It hasn’t been much of an issue but it could definitely give us more working time if we could stay focused. Also, Google Docs, the online program we’ve been using to layout the game has been refreshing and unable to reload the document. It isn’t a big deal, although it tends to cost group members valuable time. Finally, a less important problem is creating educational questions for the game. We’ve worked through the issue and I think that it is about figured out. All in all, none of these challenges have really affected our group much and for the most part, we’re working very well and quickly.

Plans for Tomorrow: We made lots of progress today, including creating every sprite we need. All of the pictures have been drawn and we’re doing great. Hopefully tomorrow our group can accomplish tasks such as picking the color scheme, importing drawings to documents, and maybe even beginning to create sound files if all of our foreshadowing questions can be completed. We’ve been working efficiently and so far we’re finishing earlier than other groups. This project has been exciting so far, and the end result will be fantastic.

Today the groups worked on their game design skill. For the most part the groups worked well. The groups did not get off topic and stayed working all hour. Almost all the groups completed the criteria sheet for the game and some groups started to work ahead.

There were some challenges in our groups, for example, my group had some trouble with the criteria sheet. For the people who were ahead they had some trouble with finding the right sounds and pictures for the game. One of the other problems was that people could not find the right software to use for the sounds.

We hope that all groups get done with the criteria/game design sheet so that we can turn those in. We also catch everybody up if they are behind. We will also be hoping to start creating the characters and their clothes for the game.

Today we created a game that allowed the character or object to jump, move side to side, climb ladders, and fall with gravity. There were several successes, or things that have worked well today. One thing that was successful was creating the sprites; since we have learned previously before how to create the sprites, we had no problem creating them on our own. Along with the sprites, we have previously learned how to create the objects by loading in the sprite and sometimes having to add several events along with it, so I thought that it was a success too.  The last thing that went well was setting the jump to position for the character and object. After hearing the instructions, we accomplished the task easily by adding the event.

Even though there were successes, there were some difficulties, or challenges. Setting the gravity just right was tough, because, if you did not set it just right it will mess up your game.  Another thing that was difficult was learning how to set up and make the character jump. You had to add several events and controls to make the character jump, and land on the platforms correctly using keys on the keyboard. The last difficult thing was dealing with the X and Y coordinates on the check collision. This was difficult because there were negative and positive coordinates. People sometimes forgot to put the negative sign and others forgot to make it a positive, which caused problems later on while playing the game.

There are a few things that we hope to do tomorrow. One thing I hope to do tomorrow is to choose the best games out of the ones we have wrote ideas about and pictured. Also, I hope to take what we learned and apply it to our game to make it better.  The last thing I hope to do is add actions and events such as jumps, platforms, and ladders. Overall, I thought today went very well.

Today we started working on brainstorming for our video games. These video games will be used on our Tom Sawyer website, so other people can learn about Tom Sawyer. Today we used great teamwork skills. Everyone was contributing to put ideas down on paper, but when it came time to present our ideas to the class it was a little hard to understand what was going on. This was quickly fixed with a little hard work, and with some problem solving we were able to share ideas with ease. Including informational facts about Tom Sawyer into our game ideas was the hardest part. Everyone had great ideas for games but we had to remember this is also educational. Tomorrow we are going through a tutorial for the Game maker Software. We hope to learn new skills, while having fun creating computer games.
